A New Learning Space for Children with Special Needs

For children with special needs, the right learning environment can make all the difference.

At New Horizon Special School in Accra, a school dedicated to supporting children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a newly renovated library is set to open new doors of learning, creativity, and communication for about 80 students who learn differently but dream just as big.

The facility, renovated and furnished commissioned by the Rotary Club of Accra West, it is a carefully designed learning space intended to help learners develop literacy skills, explore their imagination, and build confidence in an environment tailored to their needs.

Why Rotary Club of Accra West Chose New Horizon Special School

The project holds special significance for the Rotary Club of Accra West. According to the Club President, Rotarian Neyram Kukula, the initiative is rooted in a long-standing relationship between the club and the school.

“New Horizons School and the Rotary Club of Accra West have a long-standing relationship. The founder of the school was actually a member of our club,” he said.

“So in commemoration of one of our longest-standing members’ birthday, we decided to come back to New Horizons School and also do something for the school, in honour of the friendship that he had with the founder, Eddie Francois.”

Transforming an Unused Library Into a Conducive Learning Environment

He explained that the library was not originally functional when the project began.

“The kids definitely needed a place to study and to learn in a conducive environment,” he said.

“Our work here was not just to get them shelves to place books on, but to actually create a conducive learning environment for them, and this is what we’ve delivered on.”

With an investment of about GHS70,000, the Rotary Club of Accra West undertook extensive renovation works, transforming the space completely.

The project included rewiring, lighting upgrades, installation of a new air conditioner, replacement of fans, new bookshelves, laminated flooring, repainting, door replacement, window repairs, blinds installation, and the provision of tables, chairs, and an LED screen television.

Private Sector Partners Support Inclusive Education

Key partners including Engineers & Planners, Maridav Ghana Ltd, Oyo Afrique, Kinney Investments & Holdings, and Manet Group supported the project.

How the New Library Will Benefit Students

For school authorities, the impact goes far beyond the physical transformation.

“This library would help the school significantly,” the Project Director at the school, miss Jasmine Ati said.

“As learners, having access to learning materials and books in such a conducive environment would help improve literacy, communication, and creativity.”

For children with special needs, access to a supportive and structured learning environment can make a profound difference in their development. The newly renovated and furnished library offers that space one where learning is not rushed, and potential is nurtured with care.

A Library for Every Child

In a world where children with special needs are often overlooked, the newly rennovated and furnished library at New Horizon Special School offers every child access to quality education, opportunity to learn, and a space where their potential can thrive.
